David creates abstract paintings and drawings inspired by the skies and landscapes of Norfolk.

About David

“I have a photograph of my elder brother and myself in a pram on the promenade in Hunstanton with the pier behind when I was three years old. It was my first visit to North West Norfolk and ever since I have felt a close connection with its flora and fauna. I returned regularly as a visitor until I moved to Ringstead seven years ago.

I studied Fine Art at Newcastle University and Saint Martin’s School of Art in London where I lived and worked both as a painter and lecturer.

For many years the Norfolk countryside has inspired my art. I concentrate on light effects, colours and textures to communicate a particular feeling or mood. I paint on a large scale because I want a painting to have a substantial presence with a strong emotional impact. I like spectators to make their own interpretations of my work. I use acrylic paint which is stained directly onto the canvas which is stapled to the floor, this enables me to spread the paint with squeegees and sponges in a free manner. After attaching the canvas to the wall, I continue adding paint with brushes. The picture is only stretched after its completion.

I have taken part in Norfolk Open Studios since 2014 in exhibitions with other artists in Ringstead Village Hall. It has been a great opportunity to exhibit and exchange views and information with other practitioners as well as visitors who come to our shows. This is a strange time, but I usually I have other commitments so it’s really nice just to focus on my painting.”
